He’d thought God was on his side. Now he stared at his ruined face in his bathroom mirror. He’d used butterfly bandages on the hole in his neck. But the hole through his face…

Again, he pushed the sewing needle into his cheek and drew the thread through his flesh after it. His bathroom was a mess of bloody cotton, spilled peroxide and rubbing alcohol. He dared not go to an emergency room. Not if he could no longer be sure that God favored him and his guides.

The pain of that doubt hurt more than the needle.

Desperate, Grimaud thought of tests. God was all about tests, wasn’t He? Perhaps this was not a betrayal. It was a challenge, to see if Grimaud’s faith was strong, despite the demoness’s temporary victory. It was easy to have faith when one outran strong young men. It was another matter, to have faith when a demoness rammed a shoe through one’s face.

Encouraged, Grimaud tied off the knot, then plastered a large bandage over the entire mess, so that strangers would not see just how badly he’d been hurt. When his phone rang again, he would not show doubt. He would pass on what the woman had said about the key, and await his next instructions.

But somehow…for some reason he felt unsure whether he should mention that the demoness had been wearing a religious medal.

So he deliberately forgot that part entirely.
